All the bargains are gone now, so the bargain basement is no more …

  1. I must be daft, but this is the only place I could find to write a comment. I see it’s not monitored so maybe I’m typing into the abyss, but I wanted to say that I’m sorry to hear that you’re retiring the blog but I’m glad you and Elsie are well. I only just found you yesterday, and I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read. I was looking forward to finding out why rotary beats reciprocal. I prefer rotary because reciprocal (or oscillating as we call it here in the U.S.) seems “jumpy”, going to and fro like it does, but that’s not a scientific reason. I had a laugh when I read your question about string beans because I never thought about what a strange name it is. I suppose you’ve found out by now that they are green beans, and in the U.S. we call them “french cut beans” if they are cut on an angle. I don’t know what pole beans are. We are strange folk over here, judging by the way we name our legumes. I will try to read and memorize everything on this blog before it vanishes. I wish there were some way we could at least save the domain so we could have this as an archive. I’ve just acquired a hand cranked 66 with lotus decals, which is a rare thing over here. I was lucky because I wanted only a hand crank machine, I wasn’t fussy about the model or decals, but somehow I scored a rarity and paid only a pittance. Best of luck to you and Elsie. I will visit your other blog. Someday I hope to get a grasshopper.

  2. I have just found your site whilst doing some research on an old treadle singer that I’ve inherited- I already have one, but this ‘new’ one is a very different style. I just wanted to say i love your blog and the wealth of information and enthusiasm. Keep it up!
